Leading up to Super Bowl III many believed the “real” championship game was the NFL championship game, and whatever team was sent to the Super Bowl by the AFL would not be able to compete. Despite this, Jet’s quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed that the they would win. His guarantee was not taken very seriously by the masses as the Baltimore Colts were heavy favorites over Broadway Joe and the Jets, but New York proved they could play with anybody, defeating the Colts 16-7.

  2. If I were to ever say a game of football was thrown, it would be this one. The colts had they not squandered all those many chances to score and even if not including unit as interception for no score and one earl moorrils for just another field goal the score still woulda, coulda, been 20 to 16 colts then add unit as score of 7 still omitting his interception as even a field goal and you still end up with a 27 to 16 win for the colts. This is after the whooping they put on the browns. The fluke here was their inability to score although in all previous games they had no problem, and they had been tearing up the turf up until the red zone. Makes no sense unless someone doesn't want you to win. If this were a boxing match the colts would have been the #1iron jaw contending boxer going down down for the count on a whiffed punch that hadn't even landed.

  3. It is a shame that we are missing a portion of the Colts' fourth quarter scoring drive because all of the rest of the game is here. Yet, we are missing the first ten plays from that drive. According to the official play by play, the Jets got up to the ball on Turner's missed field goal with 7 minutes and 8 seconds to play in the game. This occurs at 1:49:20 in the broadcast. The broadcast picks back up at 1:49:50, with the Colts second and 10 play from the Jets 15 yard line, which was completed to Jimmy Orr for a first down to the Jet's four yard line. The late hit penalty at the end of the play from Atkinson brought the ball to the two yard line. This occurred with 4 minutes and 24 seconds left to play in the game, per the official play by play. So, we are missing ten plays on the scoring drive, following Turner's missed field goal. Here they are in the play by play, bookended by the missed field goal and Unitas' completion to Orr from the Jets' 15 yard line.

  4. Only game where 2 teams from one conference played in the Superbowl. Kinda weird to think that nowadays this would pretty much be the AFC Championship game not the Superbowl

  5. And to think , had the Colts won this game, Shula would have stayed in Balt, never would have come down to Miami, never would have been a dolphins perfect season four years later…..

  6. 10:20 Rick Volk suffers a concussion. He suffered another hit to the head in the 4th quarter during an onside kick (1:54:46), was dragged off the field by his teammates, and was vomiting into a trash can in the bus ride after the game. He then suffered a seizure at the hotel and spent the night in the hospital with Don Shula at his side.

  7. 35:47 “The ball was right in the hands of Tom Mitchell.” Bullshit, the ball was never in his hands on that pass. Al Atkinson tipped the pass which resulted in the ball bouncing off of Mitchell’s shoulder pad.

  8. This is the 1st Super Bowl that I ever saw. I was 7or8 . This was pro football at its finest. I saw something last year that made me think of these real pro football games. The Atlanta Falcons had the Patriots (and I remember them as Boston Patriots) down to what I thought was defeat. I counted this game out. I thought to myself if the Pat's can pull this off. I will always be a Brady fan. Guess what? It was one Masterful performance. I have seen the best QBs in the world and have to say that Brady is one of the best.

  9. with all the hoopla, 16-7, is a close game, this was the era when field goals were not a gimme, until the soccer guys starting kicking and teaching, now it doesn't matter, most are a gimme. (but not always).

  10. The colts were deemed unbeatable. Broadway Joe brought the AFL to the status it has today, Part of the NFL and known as the AFC. WOW. how things sure changed after this game, big shots heads were spinning. they wanted into the AFL's coffers who proved, they were a force, they beat the unbeatable Baltimore Colts, earl, and even Johnny U.
